Um...
First, I'm not gonna lj-cut this. I think this needs to be read.
I've been reading a fic for a while now, a wip, won't say what fandom, just that it's AU. The fic so far has been hot, sweet, imaginative and original. The last chapter now though, froze me.
It turned into a Domestic Discipline fic.
One of the characters acted, well, according to character, which resulted in his lover to worry about his safety. In order to be forgiven character A asked to be spanked. Character B, after a token protest, complied. And took it very much to heart.
Now, I'm all in favor of spanking, when done as foreplay. But when it's taken to the level of one character asserting control/dominance, to 'discipline' the other into a 'correct' behavioral pattern, even if the one being submitted to the discipline is all for it... it's just wrong.
Some of the reviews commented on how hot it was, and yeah, if you took the DD angle it would have been. It disgusted me.
Thankfully I've never been in an abusive relationship, nor personally know anyone who has (in RL, in cyberspace...). But DD is just one of the ways domestic violence starts. When one person/character realizes he has this power over the other, who in this fic is younger and insecure, this won't be an isolated incident.
I'm sure the author just though it in character (for her AU character, 'cause I could never see the canon characters behaving this way) and saw the spanking as hot. DD is not a widly known squick in fandom, but those of us who know it are pretty repulsed by it.
I'm sorry that this happened in this fic. I'm sorry because it was well written and had me very interested. I'm sorry that some of my fellow readers will squeal and bounce and read many many chapters of this fic only to be frozen cold when they get to this one. I'm even more sorry about those who don't see how wrong it is and find it hot.
But, even if DD doesn't rear it's ugly head again in this fic, it's already present in this 'verse s/he created. Even if the characters have a happily ever after, I won't see it that way. I see it as a relationship doomed to end in dom.violence even as it's starting. I see one of my beloved characters abuse another of my beloved characters.
Bye bye story... I shall miss you.
If you know which story I'm talking about, please keep it's tittle/author/fandom/or comm it was posted to out of any comments you might wanna make. I don't wanna hurt the author's feelings.
Edit: I need to add this link, because it's just another author's *very much more* well written explanation/opinion as to why DD is so wrong. I share her opinions. The fandom she wrote this essay for is not the fandom that brought on my rant.
