Jan. 29th, 2005 03:33 pmSo this just came to me while I was showering.
In my four favorite OTP's, one if not both of the guys had abusive parents or parent figures. It was either said or implied in canon.
Xander/Spike - Xander's parents are drunk, and at least verbally abusive. That's canon. Some think physically abusive too. And Angelus, Spike's vamp!father figure abused him too... though it gets complicated because of the vampire thing.
Ares/Joxer - It's assumed Joxer was abused by his warlord father and Jett, and pretty much known Zeus abused Ares.
Brian/Justin - Verbal and emotional abuse from Brian's parents, probably physical at one point or another. Verbal and emotional abuse to Justin from his dad --> it's all canon.
Harry/Ron - Harry was verbally, emotionally and physically abused by his parental figures, his aunt and uncle. Also canon.
So... I'm thinking there's something to this link. Not counting Harry/Ron, the other pairings are very popular within fandom. So, does the abuse factor make these characters more appealing to us? It certainly gives us abundant material for fics, but does it play a role in our liking them?
Maybe not the pairings, but the characters themselves. And then pair them up with another we think will comfort this person to no end?
What do you guys think?
PS: I'm so fucking happy! It's the last fucking day I'll be in the fucking kiosk!!!
